Regrets

Regrets? Of course I can think of a bunch. Although, I never dwell on them. The fact of the matter is that there are so many paths in life, so many cross-roads, so many decisions, so many circumstances, and so forth. How can one expect to make perfect decisions all of the time?

If I had to name one regret, it would be not extracting more history out of my grandfather before he passed away. There were so many questions I wish I would have asked him before Alzheimer's disease took hold of him and it was too late. I wish I had spent more time with him and less on my own interests.

That's probably one of the few true regrets that I have. The other many, many things I wish I had done or not done, or done better, I don't consider regrets, for this simple reason: making decisions that end up being wrong is a part of life.

I, too, wish I had spent more time with people I loved.

So true - so many crossroads and regrets that can't be resolved. Good post!

Perhaps you're familiar with a verse from Sanatra's My Way:

Regrets, I've had a few

But then again, too few to mention

I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway

And more, much more than this, I did it my way

I found it rather daunting to think of regrets, I prefer reflection on being grateful! However you speak of a regret I share. Plucking history from family before they passed. Thanks for sharing!

Hi John, this is one regret I share too, I have a photo album with no names, I guess it's too late now.

Well thought out post!

a very good attitude. as long as you can learn something it should not be a regret. even if it is something bad or a mistake.

I agree, regrets have not helped much except in one key aspect - not to make wrong decisions again.
But we are humans, aren't we?

Thank you for stopping by.

Same thing I tell my music students - don't get stressed by mistakes. Learn from them, move on, and try to do things differently the next time. A life spent regretting every false step is surely a life wasted.

Hello,
I so agree with you. Life is precious and we are bound to do things we wish we had done differently. That is how we learn of find inspiration for our next step. Still quite tender and significant that you wished you had gotten to know your grandfather better.

Even I feel the same way, wish i had spent more time with my grandfather. I was a kid when he passed away, but he was very knowledgeable person. I strict but loving person.

Well said John. You are lucky though that you had time to spend with him. My paternal Grandparents died before I was born and my Maternal grand parents lived a long way from us and died before I was out of primary school so I did not get to know them much at all.
